UK Emission Zones Explained

ULEZ Ultra Low Emission Zone

All of Greater London

The ULEZ covers all London boroughs. Vehicles must meet strict emission standards or pay a daily charge. Since August 2023, the zone has expanded to cover the entire Greater London area.

LEZ Low Emission Zone

Greater London

The LEZ operates 24/7 across Greater London and primarily targets heavier, more polluting vehicles. Most cars and small vans are not affected by the LEZ.

CAZ Clean Air Zone

Clean Air Zones operate in several UK cities outside London. Most use Class D, which includes cars. Emission thresholds are similar to ULEZ.

ZEZ Zero Emission Zone

Oxford city centre (pilot)

Oxford's ZEZ is the UK's first zero-emission zone. Only fully zero-emission vehicles (electric, hydrogen) can enter without charge. All petrol and diesel vehicles — regardless of Euro standard — must pay.
