UK Emission Zones Explained
ULEZ — Ultra Low Emission Zone
All of Greater London
The ULEZ covers all London boroughs. Vehicles must meet strict emission standards or pay a daily charge. Since August 2023, the zone has expanded to cover the entire Greater London area.
Charge: £12.50/day for non-compliant cars, vans, motorcycles
LEZ — Low Emission Zone
Greater London
The LEZ operates 24/7 across Greater London and primarily targets heavier, more polluting vehicles. Most cars and small vans are not affected by the LEZ.
Charge: £100/day for non-compliant heavy vehicles; £300/day for lorries, buses & coaches
CAZ — Clean Air Zone
Birmingham, Bath, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Sheffield
Clean Air Zones operate in several UK cities outside London. Most use Class D, which includes cars. Emission thresholds are similar to ULEZ.
Charge: £8–£12.50/day depending on city
ZEZ — Zero Emission Zone
Oxford city centre (pilot)
Oxford's ZEZ is the UK's first zero-emission zone. Only fully zero-emission vehicles (electric, hydrogen) can enter without charge. All petrol and diesel vehicles — regardless of Euro standard — must pay.
Charge: £2–£10/day depending on vehicle type
